According to a new report released by the Treasury Department, illegal aliens who are using a SSN to work in the US have likely stolen someone else’s identity to do so.
In the report released Thursday, the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration (TIGTA) admitted that the theft isn’t often reported to the individuals affected by the fraud. According to the report, 1.4 million Americans were likely affected by this in 2015.
Illegal aliens target the identities of American citizens and legal foreign workers. Those taxpayers are then left with a burden when the IRS wants to know about income reported under their identities. “Cases of employment identity theft can cause significant burden to innocent taxpayers, including the incorrect computation of taxes based on income that does not belong to them,” said J. Russell George, the IRS’s inspector general.
According to the report:
TIGTA identified that IRS processes are not sufficient to identify all employment identity theft victims. For example, 497,248 victims, who did not have a tax account in Processing Year 2015, were not identified even though identity thieves electronically filed tax returns with evidence that they used the victims’ Social Security Numbers (SSN) to gain employment.
Almost half a million identities were stolen and the thieves were not identified.
The IRS is aware that 2.4 million people file taxes using an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) every year. ITIN’s are generally given to illegal immigrants not authorized to work in the U.S. TIGTA reviewed 292 paper tax returns filed in 2015 by individuals with an ITIN. Wages were reported on 150 of those returns, and the Wage and Income Statement attached to them indicates the filer used someone else’s SSN to gain employment.
“As a result, TIGTA projects that the IRS did not identify 272,416 victims of employment identity theft for the 685,737 paper tax returns filed by ITIN holders reporting wages in processing year 2015.”
The IRS is not permitted to work with the Dept. of Homeland Security to help agents identify those taxpayers.
