On Sunday night at a home in Riviera Beach, Florida, a 4-year-old girl was shot while playing with a gun that she found on a bed.
On Monday investigators announced the arrest of a 16-year-old boy and the uncle of 4-year-old Amirra Jacques. The girl apparently found the gun on a bed, and it discharged while she was playing with it. Jacques was taken to a hospital but ended up dying a short time later.
According to Riviera Beach police spokeswoman Rose Anne Brown, Nathaniel Lowe, 25, the girl’s uncle, originally told police officers that an individual entered the home through an open door and shot the girl. Investigators later determined that the girl shot herself and the 16-year-old boy discarded the gun a couple blocks away from the home.
Lowe is now being charged with culpable negligence, tampering with evidence, grand theft of a firearm and possession of a firearm as a convicted felon. Florida Department of Corrections records show that Lowe is a six-time convicted felon and in February Lowe was sentenced to 22 months of probation for attempted burglary.
Lowe is now in jail, with bail set at $150,000, and the teen is being charged with culpable negligence, tampering with evidence, perjury and grand theft of a firearm. If the teen will be charged as an adult is still not clear.
