MICHIGAN — Susannah Jean Murray was only three weeks old when her mother left her alone in her bouncy chair with the family’s 3 pit bulls for a brief moment on Thursday while she went outside on the porch.  According to police, once the mother left the room the baby was then attacked by one of the dogs.

“She had injuries and one of the dogs, who is two-years-old, had blood near its mouth,” according to a report in the Daily Mail. The baby had suffered injuries which were consistent with a dog bite to the head and was rushed to the hospital. Despite doctors’ efforts to save her, she died the next morning.

“When you have an infant or children who are unable to defend themselves, basically defenseless, an adult should always be in the company of a child especially a three-week-old,” said Grand Rapids Police Department Sgt. Terry Dixon.

The dogs were taken to the Kent County Animal Shelter, where they remain under quarantine.
