Two parents were placed under arrest on Thanksgiving day and are facing criminal charges after their 4-year-old son shot his 2-year-old cousin with a .40 caliber pistol.
The two children were playing with the gun in the living room of the family’s house in North Philadelphia right before Thanksgiving dinner. This is when a shot was fired.
“The mother was preparing Thanksgiving dinner when the two kids were playing with the gun,” Chief Inspector Scott Small told reporters, according to the Philadelphia Inquirer.
Rachel Santiago, and Omar Laboy-Vega, both 34, and parents of three children have been charged with endangering the welfare of a child, Omar was also charged with illegal possession of a weapon after police retrieved two guns from the house.
Sonia Pizarro, a neighbor of the family, said she saw police cars outside the house at around 5:00pm.
She told the Inquirer that the father ran outside in tears, screaming, “my baby, my baby, my baby.”
The toddler was taken to Temple University Hospital, and then transferred to St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children. He is currently in critical but stable condition.
