Instead of learning to respect the historic, written words of one of our country’s most important documents, students in one teacher’s class at Salk Elementary School were taught an adulterated version in which the teacher inserted “gender-neutral” terms.
The moment she realized that her fourth-grader was learning to recite a rewritten version of the Declaration of Independence, Elizabeth Vaillancourt of Mesa, Arizona, had her child moved to a different class.
Vaillancourt shared a photo of the adulterated text on Facebook, showing how the unidentified teacher displayed a copy of the declaration in the classroom, with “all men are created equal” changed to “all humans are created equal,” KGUN-TV reported.
After Vaillancourt spoke with school officials, her child was moved to a different class. But school officials told her that her social media post had “hurt the teacher’s feelings,” the television station reported.
“Indoctrination is happening at Salk Elementary,” Vaillancourt wrote in a Facebook post, adding that since she found out what this teacher and others like her are doing to historical documents, she realized that it’s time to raise the public’s awareness to what’s going on in classrooms across the country.
“Each and every morning, after the Pledge of Allegiance is said, the class recited this altered version of our Declaration of Independence. This teacher also felt it was a ‘teachable moment’ when she shared with the class that she attended a protest of our president, Donald J. Trump. When I confronted the teacher, she, in fact, believed this behavior to be within her rights,” recalled the outraged mom who was able to get the teacher’s adulterated sign removed from the classroom… along with her son.
“My son is a Boy Scout of America and felt uncomfortable enough about this to tell us,” she added. “If he had not, and to my great shame, we would not have known. And this would be still occurring. I beg of you all, for future generations to remain free, please beware of what is actually occurring in our schools.”
Vaillancourt marveled at the fact that the school seemed to be much more upset about her Facebook posts than what was going on in the class. “I was told when we went to the school that they had another complaint. If so, why had they not acted?” she questioned, noting that the school superintendent’s office informed her that the teacher’s actions were against school policy.
A spokeswoman for Mesa Public Schools said that although there was no specific policy regarding the “discussion of political beliefs by a teacher in a classroom,” teachers were not allowed to “share their political views with students.”
“It should be recited as written, and not modified in any way,” the spokeswoman added, referring to the declaration. “School administration, when learning of the alteration to the text, provided feedback and guidance to the teacher to restore the document to its original format.”
