PROSECUTOR DECIDES WHETHER TO PRESS CHARGES AGAINST MOM OF BOY IN GORILLA EXHIBIT

Last week a little boy wandered into the gorilla exhibit at a zoo in Ohio. This resulted in zoo keepers shooting dead the gorilla out of fear that it would harm the boy. The event was caught on cell phone video and spread through the Internet overnight.

Many people, including animal protection activists, called for criminal charges to be brought against the mother of the child. But that will not happen. The mother of the 3-year-old boy will not face charges, an Ohio prosecutor said Monday.

“By all accounts, this mother did not act in any way where she presented this child to some harm,” Hamilton County Prosecutor Joseph Deters said. “She had three other kids with her and turned her back. … And if anyone doesn’t believe a 3-year-old can scamper off very quickly, they’ve never had kids.”
