Orlando Florida police are reporting that a gunman opened fire at a crowded, well-known gay bar on Sunday morning.  As of now there 42 people wounded and 20 fatalities.    The shooting took place at 2am when the bar was closing.

7am: During a press conference Sunday morning, the police chief said the nightclub shooter was armed with assault-type rifle, handgun, some type of device.  The shooter had taken hostages but later died in a gun battle with SWAT.

The incident has been declared a “mass-casualty” event.

Javier Antonetti, 53, told the Sentinel he was towards the back of the club on a night out with his brother when he heard the shots ring out.

“There were so many, at least 40,” he said. “I saw two guys and it was constant, like ‘pow, pow, pow,’ ” Antonetti said.  He said he ran out of the club and said his brother, who was on crutches, was stuck inside the building. He said his brother is uninjured but still near the club.

Jon Alamo said he was at the back of one of the club’s rooms when a man holding a weapon came into the front of the room.  “I heard 20, 40, 50 shots,” Alamo said. “The music stopped.”

An estimated 100 people were still inside the club when the gunman started shooting.

Police did not speculate about the gunman’s motive.
