6 Important Facts About Orlando Terrorist

Terror Orlando 5a shooter

The Islamic terrorist who slaughtered 50 people and wounded 53 others at the popular Pulse nightclub in Orlando, Florida early Sunday morning was a U.S. citizen of Afghan origin, living in Port St. Lucie, Florida, according to multiple news sources.   ISIS Media has claimed responsibility for the attack, and called the gunman an “Islamic State fighter.”   The gunman has been identified as Omar Mir Seddique Mateen.

Below are six important facts about the gunman, his family, and the horrific massacre.

Omar Mateen made a call to 911 as he began the attack, and pledged allegiance to ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi.   In the call, he mentioned the Boston marathon bombers.

Omar Mateen worked as a SECURITY OFFICER in Port St. Lucie, had a firearms license in Florida, and was trained in the use of weapons. He also had a criminal justice degree from a local college.

His ex-wife says Mateen BEAT HER, and she was saved from the marriage by her parents, who rescued her from Mateen. Mateen married the woman from New Jersey, in 2009, Sitora Yusufiy.   She informed news media that her family rescued her from the marriage after only a few months, when they found out he was beating her.  They came and pulled her out of the house, leaving all her belongings behind, and she never had contact with him again.   The divorce was finalized in 2011.

Mateen had been interviewed by the FBI in 2013 and 2014 for making terror-related comments to co-workers, but they had deemed him not a threat.

Omar Mateen was killed by a police SWAT team as they attempted to rescue hostages. The following video appears to be the final gun battle that ended the worst mass shooting in U.S. history.

Mateen was born in New York, but both of Mateen’s parents are from Afghanistan. His father, Seddique Mateen, was heavily involved in politics and once tried to run as president in Afghanistan.   He had also supported the Taliban, and had spoken out against the Pakistani government.  Below is a video posted May 24, 2015, of Seddique Mateen announcing his candidacy for President of Afghanistan.
