A woman in Burnham, Maine, died from a heart attack after a naked female intruder broke into her home, according to officials.
Joyce Wood, 72, died from a coronary artery disease-induced attack, state records obtained Monday by The Morning Sentinel.
The suspect identified as Tara Shibles, 37, broke into Wood’s home and jumped in her bed on April 3 at around 3 a.m.
Wood escaped and alerted police and then informed her family. Her family, however, arrived first and tried to help her get into a car. It was there that she suffered the heart attack that killed her, according to reports.
The medical examiner who conducted an autopsy ruled Wood’s death a homicide. The results are being withheld pending further investigation, according to the medical examiner’s office.
When police searched the property, they found “a naked woman hiding in the house,” as well as boots located down the street that clearly belonged to the intruder, according to the report. They immediately arrested Shibles and questioned her for hours before eventually releasing her.
Shibles has since been charged and indicted by a Waldo County Grand Jury with manslaughter, aggravated criminal trespassing, and assault.
The horrific incident at Wood’s house induced enough stress to cause her death, the medical examiner said.
Shibles’ trial is set for December.
