Ammon Bundy was granted a limited-release from prison by a federal judge on Thursday after the prosecution failed to show evidence to keep him behind bars during his trial. He spoke to the AP about his release in the video below.
His brother Ryan Bundy, who also stands trial, was given a similar release weeks ago.
Cliven Bundy, the father of both Ammon and Ryan, was also granted a release but decided to remain in prison until his other sons, David and Mel, who await trial, are released from prison.
All the men are being prosecuted for the “Bundy Standoff” of 2014. In short, the standoff was an armed confrontation between the federal government and some of the Bundy family members and their supporters. The standoff was the result of a protest against the federal government concerning land rights in Nevada.
The release of the Bundy brothers is limited. The men must remain under house arrest while the trial is ongoing.
The hearing came amid questions from defense teams about whether federal prosecutors have turned over complete evidence records about the conduct of FBI and other government agents during the standoff.
Judge Gloria Navarro, an Obama appointee, did not say why she reversed her previous detention ruling.
Her decision Wednesday followed a four-hour, closed hearing with prosecutors, defense attorneys, court security officers and the four defendants.
“There’s a lot of allegations that remain, a lot of information that’s provided,” the judge said cryptically from the bench.
Jurors got a glimpse of the claims when Ryan Bundy spoke during his opening statement, describing government snipers and surveillance cameras on dusty hilltops surrounding his family home, in the days before armed supporters arrived.
Acting U.S. Attorney Steven Myhre has cast the standoff as an armed uprising, not a peaceful protest.
The CEO of DML News, Dennis Michael Lynch was a witness in the first trial and is scheduled to be a witness in the current trial if the prosecution decides to move forward.
