A high school graduation gift turned into tragedy on Thursday evening. Memphis police said Brennan Fields, 18, was given a gun as a high-school graduation present by the father of his girlfriend, Lucinda Luna, 19. He was admiring the gift at Luna’s home in Arlington, Tennessee, when the gun accidentally went off, shooting her in the stomach.

Luna was rushed to the hospital, but she later died after emergency surgery.

“By all indications, there was no intent for this to happen,” said Shelby County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Earle Farrel, noting that there are no plans to file charges against Fields.

Neighbor and close friend Kara Stubblefield was “distraught” by Luna’s tragic death and is most worried about Fields and how he will deal with what happened. “This is going to hurt real bad for him. Like he’s not going to get over this for a long time. I’m just worried about Brennan, really, and her parents too,” she said, noting that Fields was quite experienced with guns and owns several.

Stubblefield remembered Luna as an avid reader. “Every time I went over there she was like, ‘here you need to read this book.'”
