Activists stage protests against Amazon for showcasing ads on Breitbart

Activists joined forces Tuesday, opposing Amazon’s advertising relationship with conservative website Breitbart News.

Reportedly, demonstrators from groups that included MoveOn, Sleeping Giants and Ultraviolent staged a protest outside Amazon’s annual shareholder meeting in Seattle.

Additionally, through a coalition of advocacy groups, Amazon has received petitions that include more than 1 million signatures that urge the online retailing juggernaut to cut ties with Breitbart.

On their fundraising page, Sleeping Giants laments that, “AMAZON remains one of Breitbart’s biggest advertisers, despite our repeated emails, tweets, calls and letters.”

They are raising funds in an effort to put up billboards in the Seattle area. The billboards will reportedly urge Amazon to “stop funding bigotry,” and they are only hundreds of dollars shy of the $8,000 they need to start the campaign.

“To date we have convinced more than 2,100 brands and organizations to remove ads from this extremist site,” the group’s page says referring to Breitbart News. Since the end of 2016, major brands, including BMW, Kellogg and Nordstrom, have stopped advertising on the right-leaning news site.

In addition to the outside influences, Amazon employees are also making a plea for CEO Jeff Bezos and Amazon executive Jeff Blackburn to stop advertising on Breitbart.

An email, signed by 564 Amazon employees, was sent to Bezos and Blackburn. In part, it says, “Amazon funding Breitbart has been a point of discussion for employees continuously for many months both on email lists and in person, as well as with our neighbors, friends and family. It is influencing employee morale and possibly even employee retention.”
