Within his first week in office, President Trump signed an executive order which would strip federal funding from sanctuary cities that harbor criminal illegal immigrants.
The city of San Francisco fought back with a lawsuit. Now, two additional cities have followed suit.
The cities of Chelsea and Lawrence, both in Massachusetts, filed a lawsuit in a federal court in Boston Wednesday, claiming that the President’s executive order is unconstitutional and undermines the trust they have built with immigrant communities.
The lawsuit is asking a federal judge to declare that they are not violating any rules and cannot be penalized as the executive order states.
The executive director of the Lawyers’ Committee, Ivan Espinoza-Madrigal said the communities of Chelsea and Lawrence are “gateway communities for local immigrants and minorities” and would be “devastated by a loss in funding.”
The Boston Globe reported that the city of Chelsea depends on the federal government for $14 million — 10 percent of its annual budget — where a whopping 44 percent of people living there are foreign-born.
Lawrence receives $38 million from the feds, or 15 percent of its annual budget, with a full 37 percent of its residents being foreign-born.
Boston Mayor Marty Walsh has declared that his city will remain a sanctuary city, and even said recently that he would use the City Hall as a sanctuary to “protect anyone who is targeted unjustly.”
