A 31-year-old Afghan national randomly assaulted a 59-year-old cyclist with a hammer in Hamburg, Germany, over the weekend.

After the assailant struck the victim on the head with the hammer, the injured cyclist managed to flee and alert police officials before being taken to the hospital.

The suspect was arrested at his home, where authorities found him in blood-smeared attire. The hammer used in the attack was recovered from a kitchen cabinet.

A police spokesman told reporting press that “the suspect may have a mental illness” and is currently being held at a detention center for further questioning and evaluation. It is unclear what the attacker’s motives were.

The victim has since been released from the hospital.

The hammer attack comes only days after a 36-year-old man went on a violent rampage with an ax at a Dusseldorf train station. At least seven people were harmed in that incident.
