Afghan Refugee Murderer Lied About His Age

An Afghan asylum seeker was caught lying about his age, and will be tried as an adult for the brutal rape and murder of a German EU official’s daughter.

Hussein Khavari was charged in December with raping and murdering 19-year-old medical student Maria Ladenburger in Freiburg, Germany. Her body was discovered in the River Dreisam October 16.

The victim’s father is Dr. Clemens Ladenburger, a lawyer who works for the legal director of the European Commission. Ironically, the young woman volunteered at a center that assists asylum seekers.

Khavari claimed to be 17 years old at the time of his arrest, meaning his status as a minor would limit any sentence he received to a maximum of 10 years in jail should he be found guilty under German law.

The prosecutor’s office subsequently commissioned a report that found that Khavari was least 22-years-old when Ladenburger’s murder occurred. Therefore, he can now be charged as an adult and could receive a life sentence if convicted.

Following his arrest, officials learned that Khavari reported to Greek authorities in 2013 that he was 17 years old. Khavari was in their custody in the wake of a horrific incident in May 2013 in which he threw a 20-year-old woman off a cliff on the island of Corfu. The victim was severely injured, yet survived and identified Khavari as the perpetrator of the crime. Khavari was sentenced to 10 years in a youth detention facility but was released for unknown reasons.

In 2015 he sought asylum in Germany posing as an unaccompanied 17-year-old boy.

Police linked Khavari’s DNA to traces found at the scene of Ladenburger’s murder, and he was arrested on suspicion of involvement in the crime. Authorities suspect he ambushed his victim in the early hours of the morning as she rode her bicycle home from a party, then raped and drowned her.

Khavari has remained in custody since his arrest, keeping silent on all charges, and refusing to be questioned by forensic medical experts.
