Allies encourage Trump to purge Obama loyalists

President Trump’s advisers are urging him to purge any leftover officials from the Obama administration who could be to blame for the onslaught of leaks and damaging stories that have rocked the new administration.

Politico reported on Thursday that a growing number of allies to Trump are cautioning him to ditch anyone with ties to the former president who are still installed in White House roles and replace them with individuals who are loyal to Trump.

According to the report, his advisors suspect that recent intelligence leaks are largely due to disloyal insiders that are “seeking to undermine his presidency.”

The latest in the barrage of damaging headlines are reports that Attorney General Jeff Sessions met with a Russian ambassador to the U.S. twice throughout the presidential campaign and allegedly misled senators about the interactions during his confirmation hearing.

In addition, the report states:

That was coupled with a New York Times story that Obama appointees spread information about the investigation into the Trump campaign’s contacts with Russia in an attempt to create a paper trail about the probe. Trump’s aides have also blamed Obama appointees for other damaging leaks, like Trump’s erratic phone calls with foreign leaders.

An official from the Trump administration told reporters that there has been increasing chatter among advisors about the likelihood of the series of leaks being an inside job, and they are now calling for the president to take action.

Former House speaker Newt Gingrich, who is a top surrogate of the administration, said:

“His playbook should be to get rid of the Obama appointees immediately.” Gingrich added, “There are an amazing number of decisions that are being made by appointees that are totally opposed to Trump and everything he stands for. Who do you think those people are responding to?”

Another unnamed source close to Trump said, “He should have gotten these people who are out to get him out a long time ago … a long, long time ago. I think they know that now.”

As it stands, the Trump administration has only filled a few of the hundreds of political appointees in the federal government.

The Washington Free Beacon reports that there are “550 critical Senate-confirmed open positions and the Trump administration has only nominated thirty-six people to fill them.”

Many of the appointees have undergone a delayed confirmation process, which Gingrich said is a “shrewd attempt” on Sen. Chuck Schumer’s (D-N.Y.) part to stall nominees as long as possible so that Obama appointees can keep “working control of the government for Obama.”
