An American teenager has been named as one of five people killed during a shooting at a beachfront nightclub in Cancun, Mexico.
Alejandra Villanueva Ibarra, 18, from Denver, Colorado, was trampled to death as pandemonium broke loose and people tried to escape the gunfire at the Blue Parrot Nightclub.
In addition to the five people killed, fifteen others were wounded during the shooting that occurred Monday around 2:30 a.m.
In the description of a GoFundMe set up by Alejandra’s brother, Aaron Martinez, he says his sister was in college and was working to sustain the “home of a single mother with two younger siblings due to my mom being very ill.”
“She was very young with a life ahead of her,” Martinez added.
The US State Department issued a statement following Alejandra’s death:
“We can confirm that one U.S. citizen died on January 16 from injuries sustained at the nightclub shooting at The Blue Parrot Night Club. We extend our deepest condolences to family and friends of the US citizen victim.”
The four other victims killed in the shooting were a BPM security guard named Kirk Wilson, Daniel Pessina from Italy, Rafael Antonio Peñalosa Vega from Veracruz, Mexico, and Geovanni Francisco Ruiz Murillo, also from Veracruz.
