Local Idaho news station KVIV broadcast an interview with Ammon Bundy, the leader of the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge standoff and son of rancher Cliven Bundy.
The 2014 standoff was aimed at stopping a government-sanctioned roundup of cattle on federal land. Cliven Bundy faced claims from the Bureau of Land Management that he owed more than $1 million in grazing fees on the land. Mr. Bundy said that the government did not have the authority to levy the fees. Bundy’s effort was backed by armed supporters from across the country who came to defend him and the ranch from law enforcement officers’ attempts to remove the cattle. The Bundys were arrested related to the standoff, facing charges that they’d led an “armed rebellion” against federal agents.
Ammon Bundy was granted a limited-release from prison by a federal judge on Dec. 1, after the prosecution failed to show evidence to keep him behind bars during his trial.
Charges against Cliven Bundy, two of his sons and a militia member were dismissed on Monday, with Judge Gloria Navarro saying they cannot be tried on the same counts again. According to The Arizona Republic, Navarro also said that the prosecutors in the case “violated due process rights” of the defendants.
In the hour-long interview, Ammon said he doesn’t consider himself a political figure, and that he was just doing what he thought was right based on familial and moral obligations. He said people tend to recognize him, and are not rude to him following his involvement in and release in the very public case.
Ammon retells his account of the events that led up to the standoff, and how he is doing following his incarceration and release.
