Former President Barack Hussein Obama raked in a whopping $400,000 for an interview he did on Thursday for the A&E Network.
Reports of this huge payday come after heavy criticism was leveled against him for a $400,000 fee he’ll reportedly earn for an upcoming speech in September, sponsored by Wall Street bank Cantor Fitzgerald.
The criticism stems in part from Obama’s newfound appreciation for Wall Street bankers and the wealthy class. The former president often accused the same group of greed and once referred to them as “fat cats.”
For the A&E appearance, he was interviewed for over 90 minutes by presidential historian Doris Kearns Goodwin. The Midtown Manhattan advertising upfront was hosted by A&E’s chief, Nancy Dubuc, at The Pierre Hotel, in front of network advertisers, including prominent names like Harvey Weinstein and Anna Wintour.
After receiving a standing ovation as he entered, Obama answered questions and talked about life after the White House. Obama reportedly stated he misses “sitting on the Truman balcony on summer nights and gazing at the Washington Monument” and that he is trying to learn to use a coffee machine.
Presumably, he did not have to worry about making his own coffee as he vacationed post-presidency. He’s enjoyed golfing in California, kite-surfing in the Caribbean with Virgin Group founder Richard Branson, dining with U2′ frontman Bono in New York and cruising the French Polynesia with Tom Hanks and Oprah aboard Dreamworks SKE founder David Geffen’s yacht, The Rising Sun.
Even Democratic Sen. Elizabeth Warren from Mass. voiced concern about his fees. On SiriusXM’s “Alter Family Politics,”Warren said she was “troubled” by the fees. Plugging her new book, she said, “One of the things I talk about in the book is the influence of money. I describe it as a snake that slithers through Washington. And that it shows up in so many different ways here in Washington.”
At the A&E event on Thursday, Obama’s $4000,000 interview included an opportunity to make a jab at our current president, Donald Trump. When Goodwin asked how he handled frustrating moments, Obama responded, “For starters, by not having a Twitter account.”
