Another conservative speaker banned at Berkeley

The Daily Wire’s editor-in-chief, Ben Shapiro is the third conservative political pundit to be denied the opportunity to appear as a guest speaker at the University of California, Berkeley.

In a statement released after Berkeley officials said that they were “unable to identify an available campus venue” for the event, which was to be hosted by Berkeley’s Young America’s Foundation (YAF) and the Berkeley College Republicans,  YAF member Spencer Brown called the university’s inability to find a lecture hall more than two months in advance “laughable.”

Brown quoted the university’s email, which stated, “Ben Shapiro is welcome on our campus, and we are committed to supporting his, and your, rights to free speech.”

Berkeley did not offer an alternative accommodation or date to host Shapiro as a speaker.

It should be pointed out, said the Young America’s Foundation in a press release, that an “endless stream of liberal speakers continue to be granted opportunities to speak – unobstructed by time, place, or manner restrictions – while conservatives are continually treated unequally, and repeatedly relegated to the margins of campus activity.”

According to Berkeley administrators, they can only support hosting Ben Shapiro “when events are held at a time and location that allow for the provision of any required security measures.”

The fact is that the school has a history of canceling speeches by right-leaning pundits, including Milo Yiannopoulos and Ann Coulter, after word of their intent to speak to students sparked a violent response from left-wing “anti-fascist” protesters, who continue to hold the campus hostage to their narrow point-of-view as university officials willingly give into them time and again.

In his own statement, Shapiro told the students that they “will find a way to get this event done, and UC Berkeley has a moral and legal obligation to ensure we do so.”

After Coulter’s speech was canceled, both student organizations sued the school “for placing viewpoint discriminatory restrictions on the time and place conservatives are allowed to speak.”

Yiannopoulos has said that he intends to return to Berkeley later this year for a “Free Speech Week.”
