Rep. Brad Sherman (D-Calif.) joined Rep. Al Green (D-Texas) in the effort to impeach President Trump on Wednesday.
According to Sherman, “The standard for ‘high crimes and misdemeanors’ has been met.”
During a press briefing at the Capitol, Sherman said he’s now taken the first official step to oust the President by drafting a single article of impeachment based on Trump’s firing of FBI Director James Comey last month, which he plans to introduce “fairly soon” — as in “weeks, rather than months.”
Green, on the other hand, is busy drawing up his own obstruction-of-justice resolution. “The question really is not whether the president has obstructed justice; the question really is whether the president can obstruct justice with impunity,” he said, noting, “The president, like all others, is not above the law.”
Green and Sherman did admit that the impeachment effort that would require much more than just the two of them drawing up documents; huge public outrage must be present and forceful enough to get Trump’s GOP allies on board.
“If articles of impeachment based on obstruction of justice were on the floor of the House today, they would not succeed,” Sherman acknowledged. “This is going to be a long process. … It will be a process that will take many months … and additional facts being exposed.”
Calling it “a question of conscience,” Green said that Sherman came to him regarding impeachment last Friday. “I’ve not lobbied anybody; I’m not going to lobby anybody,” said Green.
“I don’t want to leap to any conclusions about what we’ll ultimately find or what the consequences should be,” Rep. Adam Schiff (D-Calif.), senior Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee, told The Hill on Wednesday. “We’re still very early in the investigative process.”
Green and Sherman, however, have their minds made up. “I’m convinced he’s already committed an impeachable crime,” stated Green.
