Another U.S. region adds third gender option to licenses

Beginning on Tuesday, the District of Columbia is offering its residents a new gender option on driver’s licenses or identification cards issued by the city’s department of motor vehicles.

DC residents have previously been offered the options of male or female as gender identifiers, but now they may select “X,” the gender-neutral identifier, on their driver’s license or identification card.

In a statement regarding the addition, the city said that the new option is anticipated to immediately benefit the transgender community, although any DC resident seeking a license or identification card can request the gender-neutral identifier.

According to DC Mayor Muriel Bowser, the city has been a longtime supporter of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender rights and gender issues, and the new gender option is the most recent example of DC’s “commitment to inclusivity.”

DC joins Oregon which was the first state to offer its residents a gender-neutral option on driver’s licenses.
