He ruined his career, he humiliated his wife–and likely ruined her career, as well–he lied to the people of New York, and he victimized a teenage girl. Now, 53-year-old former Democratic congressman Anthony Weiner will pay for his crimes when he is sentenced by a Manhattan federal judge on Monday.

Facing as many as 10 years in jail for sexting with a 15-year-old girl from North Carolina via Skype in 2016, Weiner will likely spend several years behind bars.

Weiner first disgraced himself and became the butt of many Weiner-inspired jokes in 2011, when he was forced to resign from Congress after sending photos of his nether regions to women, and then lying about it.

That humiliation was apparently not enough to get Weiner to stop being a sext maniac, because on Jan. 23, 2016, a high-school student from North Carolina messaged him on Twitter and he went for it again, according to court documents. The student admitted she was in high school, but that didn’t stop Weiner from asking her to undress and touch herself.

Court filings reveal that Weiner progressed to sending the 15-year-old “obscene material,” including adult porn and a message “describing what he would do to her if she were 18.”

Prosecutors have asked that he serve at least two years in prison, and Weiner is begging for probation on the grounds that his dalliance with the teenager was due to his sick obsession with sexting rather than an obsession with underage girls. Even his psychiatrists are going along with this theory, claiming that he is not really a pedophile, according to court documents.

Whether a pedophile or merely sext pervert, legal experts say it doesn’t matter. Weiner failed to keep his promise to stop sexting with strangers, despite serious consequences to his life, and that fact makes him a danger to society.

“He is a repeat problem,” said a former judge in the court where he will be sentenced. “There is a need to send a message — to him as an individual, as well as general deterrence.”

Weiner’s political career, his marriage, his finances, and his reputation are all destroyed because of his obsession. His court-appointed shrink has given him an “average” chance of re-offending.
