A Democratic challenger to Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) has managed to raise big money in his bid to unseat the former presidential candidate.
Rep. Beto O’Rourke (D-TX) raised over $1 million between April and May in online contributions.
O’Rourke, who announced his candidacy in late March, faces a major battle considering no Democrat has won a statewide office since 1994. Furthermore, O’Rourke is the only Democrat to declare a Senate run in Texas so far.
House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-WI) is also facing a challenger raising fast money. According to reports, Randy Bryce (D-WI), raised over $430,000 in just 12 days.
Fundraising numbers for the second quarter, which will include funds raised in April, May and June, have not been posted on the Federal Election Commission’s website as of yet. The deadline to file is July 15, and with June included in the tally, the total will likely show that O’Rourke’s numbers are much higher than $1M.
