A federal contractor who was given top secret security clearance has been charged with illegally leaking classified national defense information to the press that includes details about alleged efforts by the Russians to hack into the U.S. election system.

The Justice Department issued a press release Monday, June 5, announcing that a criminal complaint has been filed against Reality Leigh Winner, 25, a federal contractor from Augusta, Georgia.

Winner is a contractor with Pluribus International Corporation, where she has been employed at a U.S. government facility in Georgia since February 13.

She is charged is printing a classified intelligence document and mailing it to The Intercept, an online news media outlet on or about May 9.

The document, dated May 5, 2017, includes details about attempts by the Russian military to hack into the U.S. voting systems the week before the 2016 presidential election.  The complaint alleges that Winner was only one of six people who had access to the document since it was published.

Winner was arrested by the FBI at her home Saturday, June 3, and admitted intentionally printing and mailing the document to the news outlet.

In her court appearance Monday, Deputy Attorney General Rod J. Rosenstein said, “Releasing classified material without authorization threatens our nation’s security and undermines public faith in government. People who are trusted with classified information and pledge to protect it must be held accountable when they violate that obligation,” the NY Post reported.

The leaked document alleges that employees at a US election software company were targeted by operatives from the Russian General Staff Main Intelligence Directorate, both in August and again in October of 2016.

Julian Assange of WikiLeaks is taking sides with Winner, and calling out The Intercept for exposing her.

WikiLeaks did point out that Winner’s own Twitter account shows intense opposition to President Trump.  Her account, under the name of Sara Winners, included a post on March 5 that asked, “@AnonymousPress what happened to the Feb 28 call for Trump to resign?”
