Baby dies after injuries sustained during visit with father on Father’s Day

Nylah Lewis, a 16-month-old baby girl, died Friday after a five-day struggle to survive a beating she allegedly suffered at the hands of her own father. To add horror to the tragedy, the little girl sustained her fatal injuries while visiting her father, 18-year-old Shaquan Taylor, on Father’s Day.

Nylah’s  mother, 17-year-old Tammy Lewis, left the baby in her father’s care at his Coney Island apartment last Sunday. While there, little Nylah suffered two skull fractures, a brain bleed and multiple bruises.

Lewis was summoned back to the apartment via Facebook, after Taylor reportedly sent a message to Lewis saying she needed to come get their daughter. Lewis returned to find Nylah unconscious and unresponsive, with visible bruises and struggling for air, according to police.

Lewis attempted to get help, running from the apartment with the baby. According to reports, Taylor ran after Lewis and rendered her unconscious, leaving her on the ground in the apartment lobby. Taylor then reportedly gave the baby to an acquaintance. That person called an ambulance, and Nylah was taken to Maimonides Hospital in Brooklyn.

Authorities questioned Taylor, who claimed the baby had fallen off the bed. Doctors say Nylaha’s bruises did not come from a fall, and that in addition to her other injuries, she appeared to have suffered brain damage from lack of oxygen.

Taylor, who had previously posted on Facebook that he wanted his baby to be aborted when Lewis was pregnant, was arrested for Nylah’s injuries.

According to Nylah’s aunt, Christine Munford, Taylor had threatened the baby. “He said that about a year ago he was going to hit the baby if she brought [her] around,” Munford told the New York Daily News. “And [Sunday] he threatened her and said he was going to punch her in the face when she got there. And then obviously that happened.”
