Bannon: Catholic churches have “economic interest” in illegal aliens

Former White House chief strategist Stephen Bannon slammed the Catholic Church for its stance on illegal immigration, saying leaders “need illegal aliens to fill the churches.”

In his first television interview after resigning from his job at the White House in August, Bannon told Charlie Rose of “60 Minutes” that the Catholic Church has been “terrible about” immigration. Rose had mentioned that Cardinal Timothy Dolan in New York opposed President Trump’s decision to end the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program.

“You know why? Because [they have been] unable to really … to come to grips with the problems in the church, they need illegal aliens. They need illegal aliens to fill the churches. It’s obvious on the face of it,” Bannon replied.

Attorney General Jeff Sessions announced on Tuesday that the administration would phase out the program, which temporarily blocked the deportation of undocumented immigrants who were brought to the United States as minors, giving Congress six months to act.

Bannon explained to Rose that the reason the Catholic Church is opposed to the deportation of illegal aliens is that it has an “economic interest” in “unlimited illegal immigration.”

“I totally respect the pope, and I totally respect the Catholic bishops and cardinals, on doctrine,” Bannon said before noting, “This is not about doctrine. This is about sovereignty of a nation. And in that regard, they’re just another guy with an opinion.”

For the interview, Bannon welcomed Rose to his “Breitbart Embassy,” the complex that houses the news site’s operations in Washington’s Capitol Hill neighborhood. The Embassy, a converted town house, has operated in D.C. since Breitbart News took over the residential property in 2011. Before that, it was reported to be Bannon’s private residence.

Bannon recently returned to Breitbart News, which he helmed until joining the Trump campaign in 2016.
