Three beach-goers were lounging in the sand on Friday evening when a Miami-Dade County Parks and Recreation officer accidentally drove his truck over them.
The three victims: Vicky Merlett, 20, William Merlett, 16, and Aurelien Bouaniche, 19, were lounging on the beach in Crandon Park when the officer and his county truck interrupted their evening.
Miami-Dade police said the officer, identified as 23-year-old Kevin Gonzalez, was driving a Ford F-150 truck, which can weigh over 5,000 pounds.
At about 5:23 p.m., he made a right turn and ran over the legs of the three lounging sunbathers. Gonzalez stopped the truck and immediately called for help, according to reports.
Miami-Dade Police Detective Robin Pinkard said Gonzales told police he hadn’t see the three people.
Pinkard has confirmed that officer Gonzalez had not been cited.
After the incident, which happened in Key Biscayne, FL, Vicky Merlett, was treated on the scene. William Merlett and Bouaniche were taken to a hospital.
The three victims, from South Miami-Dade’s Calusa area, were left with minor injuries, as luckily they only suffered scrapes and bruises on their legs and feet, according to police.
