Gerardo Balbuena, 49, died this week while working in a date palm orchard in Thermal, CA, located southeast of Palm Springs.  Balbuena was attacked by a swarm of bees, according to his family and fire officials.

Balbuena came in contact with a beehive and was stung by at least 30 bees.  He immediately went into cardiac arrest.

Balbuena was a Mexican native immigrant who had been employed by Hadley Date Gardens for 27 years, according to company president Albert P. Keck.

“The owners and employees at Hadley Date Gardens are devastated by the tragic death and loss of our dear co-worker and friend, Gerardo Balbuena,”

The official cause of Balbuena’s death has not been determined, although Balbuena’s daughter reported he was allergic to bee stings.  He was pronounced dead at the scene and leaves behind a wife, four daughters, a son and grandson.
