Bernie and Jane Sanders lawyer up as FBI probe heats up

Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., and his wife, Jane Sanders have hired defense lawyers amid an FBI investigation into a loan Jane Sanders obtained to expand Burlington College while she served as its president, according to Politico.

Burlington attorney Rich Cassidy, a longtime Bernie supporter, has reportedly been hired to represent Sen. Sanders, while Washington Attorney Larry Robbins will be defending Jane Sanders.

Sen. Sanders and his wife are seeking legal counsel over federal agents’ allegations from a January 2016 complaint accusing then-Burlington College President Sanders of falsifying donor levels in a 2010 bank loan application for $10 million from People’s United Bank to purchase 33 acres of land.

Burlington College ceased operations in May 2016 after failing to meet accreditation standards and falling into bankruptcy. Sanders served as president from 2004 to 2011.

The report also suggests that prosecutors may be investigating allegations that Sen. Sanders’ office inappropriately swayed the bank to approve the loan.

Brady Toensing of Burlington, a Vermont chairman for the Trump campaign, filed the complaint with the U.S. attorney for Vermont.

“I filed a request for an investigation in January 2016 and an investigation appears to have been started right away,” Toensing told CBS News. “It was started under President Obama, his Attorney General, and his U.S. Attorney, all of whom are Democrats.”

Sen. Sanders’ top adviser, Jeff Weaver, told CBS that Toensing’s claim that Sanders used his political influence to lobby for the institution’s loan is both “baseless” and “false.”
