Bernie Sanders, who many Democrats believe would have beaten Trump in 2016, or at a minimum given him a much better fight than Hillary Clinton had he been given the Democratic nomination, says he is “keeping the door open” for another run at the presidency in 2020.

When asked if the idea of running for president in 2020 has crossed the senator’s mind, an associate who helped with his previous bid for president was candid with The Hill by stating, “Yes is the answer.”  The unnamed source allegedly said, “He [Sanders] thinks he’s earned the right to run again and he believes if he would have been the Democratic candidate he would’ve won against Trump.”

“The last thing he’s going to do is sit back and let Joe Biden take it,” the Sanders associate said.

The 75-year-old Senator from Vermont has yet to publicly announce an official second run, but his behavior is indicative of someone wanting to keep his name hot in key states.  Sanders traveled to Iowa earlier this month to give a keynote address at an event held by the organization Iowa Citizens for Community Improvement. He plans to return next month in order to promote his new book: “Bernie Sanders: Guide to Political Revolution.”

Sanders has held rallies in West Virginia and Kentucky this month, publicly criticizing the Republicans’ healthcare bill. In April he toured red states with Democratic National Committee Chairman Tom Perez.

Larry Weaver, Sanders former campaign manager, said the senator is “keeping the door open” for another White House run.   And then there is the senior adviser to Sanders during his 2016 run, Larry Cohen.  He too is excited at the prospect of a second chance to win. “I can speak for the millions of people who supported him in saying we would love it if he runs again and were hopeful well run again,” Cohen said.

Cohen also said that if Bernie were to run again, it would be as a Democrat.   If elected, Sanders would be the oldest president in American history.
