Defeated presidential hopeful Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) says that a run in 2020 is not “off the table.”
In an interview that will air with SiriusXM’s “Make it Plain with Mark Thompson” Thursday morning, the Senator said it’s “much too early” to decide whether he’ll make another attempt to reach the nations top office. In the meantime, he plans to focus on obstructing the current president.
“I just have not made any decisions. And I think it’s much too early,” he said. “Our job right now is to not only fight against this disastrous healthcare proposal, it is to take on all of [President] Trump’s reactionary proposals … There’s a whole lotta fights that we have to fight. It is just too early to be talking about an election 3 1/2 years from now.”
Sanders, whose wife is currently embroiled in a scandalous investigation centered around potential bank fraud, has been taking steps that seem to indicate he’s at least considering a 2020 run.
Conjecture about Sanders 2020 bid increased when he announced his return to Iowa as part of a book tour this week, as Sanders was only a few delegates short of winning the 2016 caucus there.
Sanders has also been busy speaking at rallies, pushing the Democratic Party to accept his progressive ideas, and speaking out against the Trump administration. Sunday, he was in West Virginia, comparing the GOP healthcare reform plan to the tragic 9/11 terrorist attacks.
Not one to let an opportunity pass, Sanders was sure to comment about the Donald Trump Jr. e-mail/lawyer scandal during his SiriusXM radio spot. Referring to an e-mail exchange that set up a meeting between Trump Jr. and a Russian lawyer offering damaging information about failed presidential candidate Hillary Clinton, Sanders said, “From my point of view, it is a very damaging piece of evidence.”
He said a “methodical, objective, bipartisan process” was needed to investigate the exchange, as well as the need to look into the “possibility of Trump’s campaign colluding with the Russians.”
“This is pretty clearly a damaging revelation, but the process has got to continue, and it will,” Sanders concluded.
