Many believe that former Vice President Joe Biden will announce plans to run in 2020. According to his daughter Ashley, he is considering making the move.
During an interview with Women’s Wear Daily, Ashley Biden reportedly said her father was thinking about a run, and believes he will decide to mount a campaign. “I hope so,” she said of the notion.
While the family still mourns the 2015 death of Joe’s son Beau, Ashley said that her family supports her father’s decision to consider a presidential run.
“He’s taking it day by day after the loss of my dear beloved brother,” she added, referring to Beau. “He’ll make a decision when that time comes.”
She did concede that there was still time for the former VP to change his mind.
“A lot can happen in four years and we know this as a family,” she said. “If he is in good health, knock on wood, and seeing what the landscape is at the time, yeah, I think he is considering it.”
Regarding his ability to run, Ashley reported of her father: “He is more vivacious and has more energy in his 70s than I do in my 30s. The man is sort of supercharged. So I think, if we get to that [decision] point, yeah, I think he will do it.”
Ashley felt her father would know more about whether he would run in 2018 or 2019, and that her family talks about Joe’s potential run infrequently, but may do so more often later.
“But a lot can happen in three years,” she said. “You just don’t know. Life happens.”
Other Democrats eyeing the nomination include Sen. Kamala Harris (Calif.), Sen. Elizabeth Warren (Mass.) – both of whom have already begun fundraising operations – and Rep. John Delaney (D-Md.).
According to political analyst and consultant Douglas E. Schoen, Michelle Obama might be a good candidate. He said, “she is the candidate the divided Democratic Party needs” and is the “only prospective candidate who can bring the party together, rebuild the Obama coalition, win back the Midwest, and win the presidency.”
DML News CEO Dennis Michael Lynch gave a similar warning in November of last year, saying Michelle Obama will be on the ticket in 2020. “Nobody is talking about this today, but I assure you Michelle Obama will be running for president in 2020. No matter what anyone says differently, she will be running. And sadly, she can win.”
As for what Joe Biden is doing right now, Ashley says, “He’s busier truly than ever” and working on “getting other Democrats elected.”
Ashley is the founder of Livelihood, a line of unisex sweatshirts made in the U.S. and priced between $79 and $99, the proceeds of which benefit charity’s sponsoring education, workplace development, and job placement initiatives in Delaware and the District of Columbia.
