Caroline Biden, 29, niece of former Vice President Joe Biden, is in the news again for having stole more than $100,000 in a credit card scam. After pleading guilty to one charge of grand larceny and another of petit larceny, she was able to stay out of jail by cutting a plea deal before Manhattan Supreme Court Justice Kevin McGrath to make restitution of $110,810.04.
Biden used a borrowed credit card to set up an unauthorized customer account at Bigelow Pharmacy on Sixth Avenue in Greenwich Village. Over the course of a year, she accumulated the massive bill, according to a criminal complaint that does not name the victim card owner.
However, so long as she pays everything back and stays out of trouble, she will be permitted to enter a substitute plea to a lower, misdemeanor charge of petit larceny and be sentenced to two years probation. This is instead getting sentenced for her actual crime of felony larceny, which carries five years of probation.
This isn’t the first time the young woman has been in trouble. In 2014, she was charged with resisting arrest, obstruction of justice and harassment after a violent fight with her Tribeca roommate.
At the time, she reportedly told cops, “I shouldn’t be handcuffed! You don’t know who you’re doing this to!” Regardless of the fact that she tried to hit a police officer, Biden was let off with no consequences so long as she stayed out of trouble for six months.
Biden’s niece has had a history of problems with alcohol and drugs, which one of her friends, socialite Paul Johnson Calderon, blamed on her famous uncle. “The pressure of being Joe Biden’s niece made her totally unravel. it’s a desire for attention, a cry for help. She’s a very complicated girl who has a lot of feelings and a lot of issues,” said Calderon back in 2013. So far, she’s been to inpatient rehab at least twice, and the nature of her current crime suggests that she was likely buying drugs at the pharmacy with all that money.
Caroline’s father, James Biden Sr., is Executive Vice President of HillStone International, LLC, which provides steel mesh and reinforced concrete solutions.
