The man who stepped in to replace Mexican drug lord El Chapo as head honcho of the Sinaloa Cartel has been arrested in Mexico City in an early morning raid by federal and military personnel.

Lopez was captured during a raid of luxury apartments in Mexico City, in a neighborhood where officials have continued to deny that drug cartels were even present there.

Damaso “El Licenciado” Lopez is a former chief warden and allegedly aided the 2001 escape of Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman, who has since been rearrested and extradited to the United States in January of this year to face multiple charges. He had been working his way up the totem poll in the cartel ever since.

Authorities have had their sights set on Lopez since Guzman was taken into custody the last time and saw him as the eventual successor. But that did not come with ease, as there has been an ongoing bloodbath between Lopez and members of Guzman’s family for control of the Sinaloa Cartel.

The drug cartel is a major provider of various drugs in Mexico and the United States, including heroin, cocaine, marijuana and methamphetamine.

Lopez may end up being extradited to the Unites States, as well, according to a report on CNN. He was indicted in Virginia in 2011 for alleged distribution of cocaine and money laundering.
