Former president Bill Clinton and bestselling author James Patterson have collaborated on a new novel, which is set to be published in 2018, and have already selected Showtime to adapt it to the small screen.
Their upcoming thriller, called The President Is Missing, tells the story of a sitting U.S. president’s mysterious disappearance. Thanks to Clinton’s intimate knowledge of the Oval Office, the book will be able to incorporate an amazingly detailed account of the U.S. presidency.
Studios and networks were reportedly in hot pursuit of the project, with Clinton and Patterson conducting a 16-meeting tour through Hollywood as they sought to select the right outlet. A longtime friend of both Clinton and Patterson, CBS chairman and CEO Leslie Moonves personally guided them through the deal.
After negotiations, it turns out that Showtime will present The President Is Missing as an ongoing drama series.
“Bringing The President Is Missing to Showtime is a coup of the highest order,” crowed Showtime president and CEO David Nevins. “The pairing of President Clinton with fiction’s most gripping storyteller promises a kinetic experience, one that the book world has salivated over for months and that now will dovetail perfectly into a politically relevant, character-based action series for our network.”
Patterson, who has sold more than 380 million books worldwide during his decades-long career, said that the 42nd president’s involvement in the novel provides “rich storytelling opportunities for this series.”
Clinton has authored several nonfiction books, but “The President Is Missing” is his first novel. The book will reportedly be published jointly by Alfred A. Knopf and Little, Brown and Co.
“I’m really enjoying writing this book and working with Jim,” Clinton said in a statement. “And I can’t wait to see Showtime bring the characters to life.”
Patterson noted, “The White House is such an exciting world to explore and is made even more so with the unique insights of a former President. Rich storytelling opportunities for this series abound.”
Liberals are already picking up on the part about the drama “dovetailing” with current politics:

Others are having fun with it in a different way:
Bill Clinton wrote a book entitled “The President is Missing”?
At the end, they probably find him in the linen closet with an intern.

I see @BillClinton has a book coming out. The president is missing. Maybe he’s getting a hummer in the closet
