In his public statement on Tuesday, FBI Director James Comey alluded to another possible action that could be taken against Clinton – revoking her security clearance.
Thursday, when pressed about whether Clinton would be given security clearance if she were applying for a job with the FBI, Comey skirted around the issue, but when asked what type of discipline would be applied to an FBI employee who had mishandled classified information, “revoking security clearance” was one of the measures he said could happen.
Thursday a group of senators, including Marco Rubio and John Cornyn, petitioned the State Department to suspend the security clearance of Clinton and her top aides.
Senators John Cornyn and Cory Gardner also proposed a bill that would strip Clinton’s security access altogether – which means she would not have access to the top secret briefings that all presidential candidates usually have once they claim the nomination, as reported by the Washington Times.
“We believe that is clear from Director Comey’s statement and the FBI investigation that the State Department should immediately suspend the clearances of Hillary Clinton, Huma Abedin, Cheryl Mills, Jake Sullivan, and other former State Department employees for security violations if they still maintain them,” the senators wrote, naming the three top Clinton aides who formed her inner circle at the State Department.
House Speaker Paul Ryan also sent a letter to Director of National Intelligence James R. Clapper, requesting that no classified information be provided to Clinton during the presidential campaign. If it is not stopped, she will automatically have access once she officially receives the nomination at the Democratic convention.
In testimony Thursday, Director Comey admitted that Clinton’s lawyers – who do NOT have security clearance – were given access to the emails that contained top secret classified information.
