Since its founding, the United States has always had a male president living in the White House with a female spouse labeled as the “First Lady.”
Hillary Clinton is the first female to run for the presidency, and many are now wondering what the official title for Bill Clinton would be if Hillary is able to win this November.
While many think the “First Gentleman” would be an appropriate title, Bill said on a campaign stop in North Carolina on Tuesday that he would like to be called “First Volunteer.”
“I don’t care what they call me as long as she wins,” he said as he greeted supporters. “I’ll be the First Volunteer. I hope to be the best free labor she’s got.”
Throughout his time campaigning for Hillary, Bill has also expressed interest in being called “First Dude” and “First Laddie.”
When Sarah Palin was governor of Alaska, her husband Todd Palin also preferred to be called the state’s “first dude.”
If Donald Trump doesn’t win this election, the former president will essentially redefine the traditional role that has always been held by the female spouse of the President of the United States.
