Elon Musk made a sobering prediction following a speech made by Russian leader Vladimir Putin on Friday: artificial intelligence (AI) will be the cause of World War III.

“China, Russia, soon all countries w strong computer science. Competition for AI superiority at national level most likely cause of WW3 imo (in my opinion),” the Tesla and SpaceX CEO tweeted Monday.

On Friday, Putin said that the first global leader in AI will “become the ruler of the world.”

Putin continued to say that AI provides both “colossal opportunities” and “threats that are difficult to predict.”

“Whoever becomes the leader in this sphere will become the ruler of the world,” he said at a meeting with students on Friday.

Musk has been extremely vocal on his thoughts about AI, and has even speculated about AI’s application to wars and the idea of an “automated war.”

When one Twitter users asked him about the potential for this type of “automated war,” Musk’s response was chilling. He was asked, regarding AIs operating for various nation states being given a degree of authority: What if they decided to break the contract of “Mutually Assured Destruction?”

In response to the Twitter user, Musk said: “May be initiated not by the country leaders, but one of the AI’s if it decides that a prepemtive (sic) strike is the most probable path to victory”.

The conversation can’t help but leave one thinking about the movie, “The Terminator.”

The US is considered to be the current leader in the AI department, with the coffers of tech giants Google and Microsoft leading the research and development charge, but experts speculate China may have the ability to catch up. A report by Goldman Sachs on the financial viability of the nation’s AI industry found the Chinese extremely hopeful about its prospects.

“We believe AI technology will become a priority on the government’s agenda, and we expect further national/regional policy and funding support on AI to follow,” the investment bank said.

During a National Governors Association event in Rhode Island in July, Musk warned attendees that AI poses an “existential threat” to humans. According to Musk, AI is dangerous and must be addressed before someone creates it.

“Until people see robots going down the street killing people, they don’t know how to react because it seems so ethereal,” Musk said at the time. “AI is a rare case where I think we need to be proactive in regulation, instead of reactive.”

“When one party’s drones are destroyed by drones of another, it will have no other choice but to surrender,” the Russian leader reportedly said.

According to Putin, regarding leading in the AI sphere, “It would be strongly undesirable if someone wins a monopolist position.
