New York Ad agency J. Walter Thompson has joined forces with Black Lives Matter, in creating a national website geared toward shoppers who may be looking for businesses and food establishments owned exclusively by African-Americans.
Brent Choi, Chief Creative Officer of J. Walter Thompson New York said this about the venture, “We hope to reduce the racial disparity that exists in economic well-being through the promotion of black business ownership.”
Black Lives Matter wants the website, “BackingBlackBusiness.com” to become, “the biggest and most easily accessible black businesses database in the country.”
So far, the website has 300 members in their directory to date.
According to the U.S Census Bureau, there are an estimated 2.6 million black-owned businesses in the nation.”
A Co-founder of Black Lives Matter, Patrisse Cullors, said, “Black-owned business have long been a staple in the black community, providing jobs, economic security and a somewhere for us to go and feel seen and safe. In these uncertain times, we need these places more than ever.”
