16-year-old Lee Manuel Vilonia-Paulino, of Lawrence, Massachusetts, was reported missing by his family on November 18th.
According to Vilonia-Paulino’s family, the police did not take the report of his absence seriously, treating him as a run-away.
On December 1st, Lee’s body and head were found by a dog walker near the Merrimak River. Based on evidence found at the scene 16 year old Mathew Borges was arrested Saturday morning and booked into custody on first degree murder charges.
According to the Essex District Attorney’s Office spokeswoman, Carrie Kimball Monahan, Borges apparently went to school with the victim.
According to the Globe, the victims family held a press conference stating that, “We’ve been here since the beginning, asking for help,” the teen’s grandmother, Ivelisse Corniel said. “We are poor, we are Hispanic, they consider this a normal runaway case. I told them from day one that it wasn’t.”
Details of the crime or any evidence collected have not been released. Borges is scheduled to be arraigned in Lawrence District Court on Monday as an adult on a count of first degree murder.
