According to a new U.S. Customs and Border Patrol (CBP) report, data shows that attempts to cross the Southwest border between Mexico and the United States are on the rise, with detentions reaching Obama-era levels.

The data shows that the number of illegal immigrants detained along the American Southwest border was 39,006 in November, a 12-percent increase from October, and over 502 percent more than the detentions reported for March and April.

From the CBP:

CBP has seen an uptick in individuals month-to-month apprehended while trying to enter the country illegally in between the established ports of entry, and an increase in those presenting themselves for entry, without proper documentation, along our Southwest border.

The majority of these individuals are single adults, while the largest percentage increases come from family units and unaccompanied children who increased 45 percent and 26 percent respectively compared with the previous month.

In FY2016, the number of detentions throughout the year ranged from 33,600 to 56,535 per month. It soared as high 66,708 per month at the beginning of FY2017, the last months of former President Barack Hussein Obama’s administration.

In March, that number began decreasing steadily, dipping to as low as 15,766 in April, before starting to rise again. It has steadily increased to the levels seen before the election of President Donald J. Trump.

Department of Homeland Security press secretary Tyler Houlton said in a statement to The Hill: “We need Congress to act immediately to close immigration loopholes, fund the border wall, terminate outdated visa programs and provide the necessary tools for DHS officials to carry out their mission.”

The total number of 563,204 apprehensions at the Southwest border in FY2016 has decreased in FY2017 to 415,191, a reduction of 148,013.

“Under President Trump, illegal immigration has declined dramatically over the last year,” Houlton reportedly said. “The administration is working tirelessly to secure the border, enhance interior enforcement and establish a merit-based immigration system.”
