In an effort to stop migrants from crossing the border illegally to get into the United States, Border Patrol agents in the Tucson sector are now prosecuting every single migrant who breaks the law, including first-time offenders.
The program was implemented in June. First time illegal border crossers face a misdemeanor charge, while those who repeatedly break the law will be charged with a felony. During the first 30 days of the program, the Tucson Sector prosecuted 565 first-time offenders.
In addition to enforcing the law, the program is designed to help save lives.
During June, agents had to rescue 80 illegal aliens after they crossed the border illegally and nearly died on their journey through the unforgiving terrain.
According to Border Patrol data, 6,915 corpses were found along the southwestern border between October 1998 and September 2016.
