A senior intelligence official told lawmakers that Russia is interfering in the 2020 election to re-elect Donald Trump, it emerged Thursday.

The New York Times revealed that the official was part of a briefing to the House Intelligence Committee, which is chaired by Democratic Trump enemy Adam Schiff, and told lawmakers of both parties about Russia’s backing for a second Trump term.

The article goes on to state the following:

Trump was furious when he learned that Schiff had been briefed, believing the information would be used against him.

The report does not state what Russia is allegedly doing to interfere in the 2020 election.

The New York Times cited “five people familiar with the matter,” and wrote in their report:

The day after the Feb. 13 briefing to lawmakers, Mr. Trump berated Joseph Maguire, the outgoing acting director of national intelligence, for allowing it to take place, people familiar with the exchange said. Mr. Trump cited the presence in the briefing of Representative Adam B. Schiff, the California Democrat who led the impeachment proceedings against him, as a particular irritant.

During the briefing to the House Intelligence Committee, Mr. Trump’s allies challenged the conclusions, arguing that Mr. Trump has been tough on Russia and strengthened European security. Some intelligence officials viewed the briefing as a tactical error, saying that had the official who delivered the conclusion spoken less pointedly or left it out, they would have avoided angering the Republicans.

Politico reporter Eric Geller tweeted, “Just wild: Trump replaced Acting DNI Maguire because he learned that ODNI’s top election security official had briefed HPSCI on 2020 preparations and wrongly believed she’d given exclusive info to Schiff.”

“Well, that explains that: According to the NYT, Pierson and her colleagues told HPSCI that Russia was interfering in the 2020 election to help re-elect Trump. https://nytimes.com/2020/02/20/us/politics/russian-interference-trump-democrats.html,” Geller added.

The Washington Post first reported on the matter:

President Trump erupted at his acting director of national intelligence, Joseph Maguire, in the Oval Office last week over what he perceived as disloyalty by Maguire’s staff, which ruined Maguire’s chances of becoming the permanent intelligence chief, according to people familiar with the matter.

Trump announced on Wednesday that he was replacing Maguire with a vocal loyalist, Richard Grenell, who is the U.S. ambassador to Germany.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer responded to the report, tweeting, “Republicans keep blocking election security bills in the Senate, and now we know why: They’d rather let Putin win than stand up to President Trump.”
