BREAKING: Ex-Trump adviser pleaded guilty to lying to FBI agents


According to a statement released by the Department of Justice Monday, a former aide to the Trump campaign, George Papadopolous, pleaded guilty on Oct. 5 to lying to FBI investigators in the Mueller probe.

The criminal complaint reports that Papadopolous, who served as a foreign policy advisor for the Trump presidential campaign, “made material false statements and material omissions during an interview with FBI agents on January 27, 2017.”

The complaint further states that “at the time of the interview, the FBI had an open investigation into the Russian government’s efforts to interfere in the 2016 presidential election, including the nature of any links between individuals associated with the Campaign and the Russian government, and whether there was any coordination between the Campaign and Russia’s efforts.”

The interview took place just one week after President Trump’s inauguration.

The Los Angeles Times reported the following summary of the announcement:

George Papadopolous, a former foreign policy advisor to Donald Trump’s presidential campaign, has pleaded guilty to making false statements to the FBI, according to court papers unsealed today.

Papadopoulos was one of several foreign policy advisors to Trump during his campaign. 

Papadopoulos previously served as a policy and economic advisor to Ben Carson, who notably struggled with domestic and foreign policy issues during his failed presidential run.

Before that, the 30-year-old was a consultant at a London-based oil and gas company. He’s a director at the London Centre of International Law Practice. He graduated from DePaul University in 2009.
