At least a dozen people have been wounded in an explosion that reportedly ripped through a kindergarten in the eastern Chinese province of Jiangsu on Thursday.

Parents were picking their children up from school at the time. “About 5 p.m., we heard a blast and thought it might have been a gas explosion at a nearby food vendor,” one witness told reporters. “Many people could be dead.”

Pictures and videos posted online showed the carnage, in which at least a dozen people — young children amongst them — can be seen lying outside the gate of the school, some covered in blood while others appeared to be unconscious, and a few had their clothing burned off.

In one particular video clip, a man covered in blood wearing burned clothing can be seen trying to stand up before falling back down. In another clip, people can be heard shouting, “Blast, blast, dial 110 quickly!”

It’s currently unclear how many were injured. Casualties have been reported, but it is unclear how many.
