Law enforcement officials in northern California say five people are dead–including the killer–and many others injured, after a gunman went on a shooting rampage across at least seven different locations Tuesday morning.

The shooting reportedly started at a home near the rural town of Red Bluff, in Tehama County, California, and eventually ended at the Rancho Tehama Elementary School, which was put on lockdown.

At least 100 law enforcement officers are investigating seven different crime scenes, sheriff’s officials stated. Officers shot and killed the gunman, and have retrieved a semi-automatic rifle and two handguns.

One student was shot at the school and was taken to the hospital. Another student was hit by a bullet while in a car. It was reported that 10 shooting victims were taken to various hospitals in the area. The victim count may rise, officers said.

Assistant Sheriff Phil Johnston stated, “We are aware that there was a domestic violence incident as reported by neighbors involving the suspected shooter.”

“I know that we have (airlifted) a number of students,” Johnston told reporters. “I know that the school’s been cleared. I know that we have children that were attending school in a safe location at this time.”

In an interview with Redding.com reporter Jim Schultz, the shooter’s neighbor, Brian Flint, said the suspect is a known felon in his 50s, and that living near him was “hell.”

Flint referred to the gunman as “Kevin,” and said he often fired multiple rounds from his gun in the early morning.

“The crazy thing is, the neighbor has been shooting a lot of bullets lately – hundreds of rounds, large magazines,” Flint said. “We made it known that this guy is crazy and he’s been threatening us and everything like that.”

The gunman reportedly stole Flint’s truck and shot his roommate as part of his rampage Tuesday morning. Schultz tweeted that his roommate was killed.

Schultz also tweeted about an interview with a local man, Salvador Tello, who was taking his three children to school when the gunman fired on a truck in front of him. “He said he saw bullets strike the truck in front of him, and he put his children down to protect them, and put his truck in reverse. As he left, he saw a woman lying dead in the street, and her wounded husband was next to her.”

The Rancho Tehama Reserve is approximately 120 miles northwest of Sacramento.

This is a developing story.
