An “explosive device” blew up in the center of the German city of Ansbach, killing one person and injuring 10 others, the city’s mayor told local media early Monday.
Mayor Carda Seidel was quoted by Munich’s Focus magazine as saying that the explosion late Sunday night was at the entrance to an open-air music festival. Police in Ansbach said a the bomber himself was killed when the explosive device went off.
Ansbach police said in a statement early Monday that just after 10 p.m. Sunday they were alerted to an explosion in the city center.
The website for a group of local newspapers, nordbayern.de, reported that Seidel said it was not yet clear if it was an attack.
Joachim Herrmann, Germany’s interior minister, has left Berlin for the city, Sky News reported.
Germany has been on high alert following a series of incidents in recent days. On Sunday, a Syrian refugee wielding a machete killed a woman and injured two other people in the German city of Reutlingen. The the 21-year-old man was apparently acting alone and has been arrested. And on Friday, nine people were killed in a shooting near a shopping mall in Munich, which was carried out by an 18-year-old who later turned the gun on himself.
