The highest ranking military officer in the country has officiated a formal letter stating the policy of allowing transgender individuals in the U.S. military will remain as is.
In the penned letter, Joint Chiefs Chairman Gen. Joseph Dunford states that the military’s transgender policy won’t actively change until President Trump sends specific and outlined directions to the Pentagon. Until then, transgender combatants will remain active in the armed forces, and transgender individuals seeking to apply to the military are still able to do so.
“There will be no modifications to the current policy until the president’s direction has been received by the secretary of defense and the secretary has issued implementation guidance,” Joint Chiefs Chairman Gen. Joseph Dunford wrote in the letter, according to multiple reports.
The letter comes a day after Trump tweeted that he would ban transgender people from serving in the military:
“After consultation with my Generals and military experts, please be advised that the United States Government will not accept or allow…… ….Transgender individuals to serve in any capacity in the U.S. Military. Our military must be focused on decisive and overwhelming….. ….victory and cannot be burdened with the tremendous medical costs and disruption that transgender in the military would entail. Thank you.”
The tweets prompted immediate questions about how a policy change would be implemented for individuals already serving, but no further details have been provided thus far.
A copy of Dunford’s letter was posted online by CNN’s Barbara Starr.
