BREAKING: North Korea fires surface to ship missiles

DEVELOPING: According to South Korea’s military officials, North Korea launched several ballistic missiles on Thursday.  The launch comes shortly after South Korea halted the installation of the U.S. missile defense system called THAAD.   Rep. Adam Smith, the top Democrat on the House Armed Services Committee, called South Korea’s decision “a blow to our national security interests.”

“North Korea fired multiple unidentified projectiles, assumed to be surface-to-ship missiles, this morning from the vicinity of Wonsan, Gangwon Province,” the Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) said, according to to the Yonhap news agency.

The United States stations about 28,500 troops in South Korea as deterrence against potential aggression from North Korea.
